GYM BATTLE · ROCK
How much special Rock-type damage can Lance & Aerodactyl add in Gym Battles?
We tested Lance & Aerodactyl as the primary special Rock-type attacker and alongside Selene (Alt.) & Nihilego. Both routes use the Rock-weak matchup in the fifth Gym Battle that allows special attacks.
The baseline Selene team reached 3.368 billion. Replacing Selene with Lance produced 3.475 billion, while running the two together produced 6.494 billion. These are the teams’ special Rock-type damage indices over 270 seconds, including the EX4 weakness bonus.

Special Rock-type output over 270 seconds
| Team | Team special Rock index (EX4) | Change vs. baseline | Featured pair (base) | Team special Rock index (base) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Selene leads (baseline) | 3,367,720,372 | — | 2,245,146,915 | 2,245,146,915 |
| Lance replaces Selene | 3,475,282,728 | +3.2% | 2,316,855,154 | 2,316,855,154 |
| Selene and Lance together | 6,493,700,134 | +92.8% | 1,236,236,471 | 4,329,133,427 |
Of the two Lance lineups, the higher-scoring one was “Selene and Lance together” (+92.8% versus the baseline). The featured pair column counts Selene in the baseline and Lance in both lineups that include him.
The earlier 18-type comparison reported a base index of 1,385,394,576 for Selene, Perrin and Lucas. For this article we also re-evaluated the original trio’s grid and move-order candidates under the fifth Gym Battle conditions using the same calculator as the Lance teams. The change from the earlier article’s index is excluded from Lance’s percentage comparison.
The 92.8% gain includes the grids and move order chosen for each team. Keeping the same dual-attacker move order but switching Selene back to her baseline grid yielded 6.098 billion, still 81.1% above the baseline team.
The team’s special Rock-type index counts only special Rock-type attacks. For EX4, we multiply each qualifying action by 1.5, round it down, then sum the results, as in the previous Gym Battle comparison. The calculator card shows its full base index before the extra 50% bonus.
How Lance sets up the team’s special attacks
Lance & Aerodactyl debuted in the November 1 Mix Scout as a Sprint sync pair. Rock Shift turns Hyper Beam into a Rock-type attack against one target. Against a full team of three, Venerable Wings Ancient Power hits all opponents without a spread penalty.
After dealing damage, Venerable Wings Ancient Power sets Rock Zone and gives all allies two ranks of Special Moves ↑ Next. The zone boosts the Rock-type attacks that follow. Lance can also set Kanto Circle (Special), making a teammate’s attack timing especially important when the lineup retains another special Rock-type attacker.
With his Field EX Role unlocked, Lance sets an extended Rock Zone just before his first sync move. After the sync, his passive sets Kanto Circle (Special). An ally following up with a special Rock-type attack can benefit from both effects.

Here Lance takes Perrin’s place, leaving Selene on the team. After the EX4 bonus, Selene contributes 4.639 billion and Lance contributes 1.854 billion. Both attackers can take advantage of the same Rock Zone.
Lance uses Venerable Wings Ancient Power twice, Hyper Beam eight times and his sync move once.
Lance uses his first Venerable Wings Ancient Power at 90.25 seconds, setting Rock Zone just before Selene’s sync move. He renews the zone with his own sync at 156.75 seconds and uses his second Venerable Wings Ancient Power at 218.5 seconds.
Sync moves in order — Lucas (Champion) (28.5s) → Selene (Alt.) (90.25s) → Selene (Alt.) (99.75s) → Lance (156.75s) → Selene (Alt.) (199.5s) → Selene (Alt.) (256.5s).
Lucas or Gloria as support for Selene and Lance?
We kept Selene’s and Lance’s sync grids fixed and tried Lucas (Champion) and Gloria (Anniversary 2025) in the third slot. We compared their teams’ special Rock-type attacks over 270 seconds against three Rock-weak opponents in the fifth Gym Battle.
| Support | Team special Rock index (EX4) | Grids and move order |
|---|---|---|
| Lucas (Champion) & Dialga (Origin Forme) | 6.494 billion | Open the Lucas team in the calculator |
| Gloria (Anniversary 2025) & Cinderace (Tera Type: Rock) | 4.263 billion | Open the Gloria team in the calculator |
Both teams used six sync moves in 270 seconds. The Lucas team finished 2.231 billion ahead of the Gloria team in special Rock-type damage.
The difference shows up on the side opponents. Lucas used Shatterproof Dragon Breath nine times. With his selected grid, he lowered all three opponents’ Sp. Def by six ranks. Gloria Terastallized into a Rock type on entry and used Rutile Tera Blast on the center. Its Sp. Def also fell by six ranks, but the two side opponents took Selene’s and Lance’s spread attacks at full Sp. Def. The calculation includes the standard damage increase from lower Sp. Def, but excludes the additional power that Selene’s Nihil Meteor Beam gains as the target’s Sp. Def falls.
Gloria’s physical Rock-type sync move and Tera Moves contributed another 77.0 million, counted separately from the special attacks in the table. These estimates apply to the linked move orders. They do not quantify the extra time her flinches or healing could buy the team.
Lance’s featured sync grid
The grid shown here uses 70/70 energy and is for Lance alongside Selene. To use this exact build, raise Lance to move level 5 and unlock the 70-energy cap. Furious Brain (red) and Kanto C (Spec) Extension 3 (gold) each unlock at move level 3 and cost 10 energy.
Lance can raise his Sp. Atk by six ranks in one turn with his Trainer move. At +6, Furious Brain adds 30% move power to his Hyper Beam and Venerable Wings Ancient Power. With only this tile’s effect disabled, the team’s EX4 special Rock-type index fell by 132.9 million.
Kanto C (Spec) Extension 3 also helps Selene. The model extends Kanto Circle (Special) from 50 to 80 seconds each time Lance sets it. Removing only that extension cost the team 247.8 million on the same route.
When Lance replaces Selene, he uses more sync moves. That grid takes Rock Zone: S-Moves ↑ 9. Disabling it lowered the EX4 index by 238.6 million. Each tile was tested separately with all other selections and the move order held fixed.

What the comparison measures
We used the fifth Gym Battle’s Rock-weak matchup that allows both attack categories: three tickets, 270 seconds, five starting sync buffs and three opponents. All pairs are at move level 5 and 6★ EX with EX roles unlocked and a 70-energy grid cap. Both stat-drop resistances are zero, with no opponent-specific passive preset.
The 6.072 billion figure in our previous fifth Gym Battle article came from a physical team led by Arc Suit Brock & Onix. Here, each percentage is measured against Selene’s special Rock-type team.
Selene and Perrin use Superawakening level 5. Lance and Champion Lucas are ineligible. Perrin can lower a random stat, but the comparison does not assume this produces a guaranteed Sp. Def drop.
Lance’s sync move scales with his Sp. Atk. We model it at double power at +6, following other sync moves with the same condition. Circle durations are also model estimates.
The calculation does not give Selene extra sync damage by assuming that a chance-based stat boost always activates. The comparison covers the teams and move orders linked here.
Hyper Beam has 90 accuracy. Neither featured Lance grid takes Piercing Gaze, and the calculation assumes every attack hits. A miss lowers Lance’s contribution in an actual battle.
These are calculated damage indices for the published grids and routes. The model does not simulate opponents running out of HP, team survival, incoming attacks or extra waiting time from the two-slot move gauge reduction.
